Who is it aimed at?

The course is designed for school science teachers who have been designated as the Radiation Protection Supervisor for their school. Current Holders of this qualification are required to update their qualification every 5 years

What are the objectives?

To look at the legal requirements schools must follow with respect to ionizing radiation used in School Science lessons, and also discuss the appropriate safety protocols required by relevant school science demonstrations and experiments.

 

During the course, the following will normally be covered:

 

·         The role of the RPA/RPO/RPS

·         The importance of safety in practical work in Nuclear Physics topics.

·         How to handle the radiation sources safely.

·         Various demonstrations with further safety information embedded into them.

·         How to perform leak tests.

·        How to dispose of unwanted radioactive sources.

·        Where to go for competent advice and guidance when required

 

How will it make a difference?

Provide attendees with the knowledge to develop and maintain effective management arrangements to safely manage sources of radiation in their schools including their safe use in experiments and demonstrations.

 

This will assist the school to comply with its requirements under the Ionising Radiation Regulations 1999.
